Functional Assessment Flashcards
What is the purpose of Functional Assessment?
measures person’s ability to complete tasks or roles
used for setting baseline data, shows level of safety, provides evidence of treatment effectiveness, used as the basis for placement decisions
What are the 2 kinds of assessments used most often?
Performance Based: direct observation
Self-assessments: patient is asked directly by the PT or a trained interiewer, or the patient fills out the questionnaire themselves
ex: OPTIMAL
Transfer Definitions: Independent
patient is able to consistently perform skill safety with no one present
Transfer Definitions: Supervision
patient requires someone within arms reach as a precaution: low probability of patient having a problem requiring assistance
Transfer Definition: Close guarding
person assisting is positioned to assist, with hands raised but not touching the patient: full attention on patient: fir probability of patient requiring assistance
Transfer Definitions: Contact guarding
therapist is positioned as with close guarding with hands on patient, but not giving any resistance: high probability of patient requiring assistance
Transfer definitions: Minimum assistance
patient is able to complete majority of the activity without assistance
Transfer Definitions: Moderate assistance
patient is able to complete part of the activity without assistance
Transfer definitions: Maximum assistance
patient is unable to assist in any part of the activity
Name the Bed Mobility/ Transfer, Ambulation Grades
Independent
Supervision
(transfer only) Close Guarding
(transfer only) Contact Guarding
Minimum assist
Moderate assist
Maximum assist
Name the Balance Grades
Normal: static- pt able to maintain steady balance w/o support
dynamic -accepts maximal challenges, can shift weight easily within full range
Good: static -pt able to maintain balance w/o support, limited postural sway
dynamic -accepts moderate challenges, maintains balance while picking something up off the floor
Fair: static- pt able to maintain balance w/ handhold support, may require occasional min assist
dynamic -accepts minimal challenge, maintains balance while turning head/trunk
Poor: static- pt requires handhold and mod-max assist to maintain posture
dynamic -unable to accept challenges or move without loss of balance
No Balance
Define Test Reliability
measuring item dependently, time after time, accurately and without variation
Inter-Rater: agreement among multiple testers/observers
**testers must be trained and scoring clearly, strictly defined and applied
Intra-rater: performed consistently by the same tester each time
Define Validity
Does the test measure what it’s designed to measure?
**Concurrent validity -the degree to which two different tests agree
