What’s the big difference between Older and Younger adolesents?
both are maturing physically, developing their roles in society, but Older adolescents are learning to drive and trying to find jobs
what are the orthopedic consequences of growth spurts?
bones grow faster than muscles: work on flexibility
ex: hip flexors in Osgood–Schlatter disease
Name some of the milestones teens go through when transitioning into adulthood
dating, leaving home, college, choosing/developing their roles in society
What is Idiopathic Scoliosis?
Scoliosis: lateral curvature of the spine
Idiopathic: unknown etiology
S or C curve
What are some of the common asymmetries of scoliosis?
the unilateral rib-hump
more prominent shoulder blade on one side
uneven shoulders and pelvis
**can’t see anything unusual from the side, there’s not much in the way of symptoms
Treatment: before 45˚ curve = bracing, after 45˚ curve = surgical repair
