Prosthetic Terms Flashcards
Abutment
A tooth, a portion of a tooth, or a portion of a dental implant that serves to support and/or retain a prosthesis.
Artificial crown
Restoration covering or replacing the major part, or the whole of the clinical crown of a tooth, or implant.
Cantilever extension
Part of a fixed prosthesis that extends beyond the abutment to which it is attached and has no additional support.
Clearance
The measured distance from opposing tooth structure during tooth preparation. Closely related to, but not the same as Reduction.
Complete denture
A prosthetic for the edentulous maxillary or mandibular arch, replacing the full dentition. Usually includes six anterior teeth and eight posterior teeth.
Core buildup
the replacement of a part or all of the crown of a tooth whose purpose is to provide a base for the retention of an indirectly fabricated crown.
Crown
An artificial replacement that restores missing tooth structure by surrounding part or all of the remaining structure with a material such as cast metal alloy, metal-ceramics, ceramics, resin, or a combination of materials.
Dental implant
A device specially designed to be placed surgically within or on the mandibular or maxillary bone as a means of providing location and support for dental replacement prosthesis.
Dentalprosthesis
Any device or appliance replacing one or more missing teeth and/or, if required, associated structures. (This is a broad term which includes abutment crowns and abutment inlays/onlays, bridges, dentures, obturators, gingival prostheses.)
Denture
An artificial substitute for some or all of the natural teeth and adjacent tissues
Fixed partial denture (FPD)
A cemented or bonded prosthesis that replaces a missing tooth or teeth. Also referred to as a Fixed Dental Prosthesis (FDP) or a Fixed Bridge.
Full Coverage Restoration
An indirect restoration that is designed to cover or restore all the extracoronal surfaces of tooth structure.
Immediate denture
Prosthesis constructed for placement immediately after removal of remaining natural teeth.
Indirect restoration
A restoration fabricated outside the mouth.
Indirect
A procedure that involves activity that occurs away from the patient, such as creating a restorative prosthesis. An indirect procedure is also known as a laboratory procedure, and the laboratory’s location can be within or separate from the dentist’s practice.
Inlay
An indirect restoration that is confined to the intercuspal region of a tooth and does not involve or cover any of the cusps of the tooth
Laminate veneer
A thin covering of the facial surface of a tooth usually constructed of tooth colored material used to restore discolored, damaged, misshapen or misaligned teeth.
Maryland bridge
Fixed partial denture featuring retainers which are resin bonded to natural teeth that serve as an abutment.
Mill
A machine or device used for working or forming materials into a desired form or shape
Onlay
A partial-coverage restoration that restores one or more cusps and adjoining occlusal surfaces or the entire occlusal surface and is retained by mechanical or adhesive means. An onlay is a type of partial coverage restoration.
Overdenture
A removable prosthetic device that overlies and may be supported by retained tooth roots or implants
Partial coverage restoration
An indirect restoration that is intentionally designed to cover or restore something less than all coronal surfaces of tooth structure.
Partial denture
Usually refers to a prosthetic device that replaces missing teeth. See fixed partial denture or removable partial denture.
Prosthesis
Artificial replacement of any part of the body.
Pontic
An artificial tooth on a fixed partial denture that replaces a missing natural tooth, restores its function, and usually restores the space previously occupied by the clinical crown.
Prosthodontics
the dental specialty pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation and maintenance of the oral function, comfort, appearance and health of patients with clinical conditions associated with missing or deficient teeth and/or oral and maxillofacial tissues using biocompatible substitutes.
Proximal Contact
The point or area where two adjacent teeth touch.
Reduction
The measured dimension or amount of structure removed during tooth preparation. Closely related to, but, not the same as Clearance.
Removable partial denture
A removable partial denture is a prosthetic replacement of one or more missing teeth that can be removed by the patient.
Removableprosthesis
Complete or partial prosthesis, which after an initial fitting by a dentist, can be removed and reinserted by the patient.
Retainer
Any type of device used for the stabilization or retention of a prosthesis; the portion of a fixed partial denture (FPD) that attaches to and in some cases covers the abutment tooth or implant abutment; the crown portion of a fixed bridge.
Scanner
A device that optically acquires information about an object in order to digitally recreate the object. A digital impression.
Veneer
Laminate veneer
