What is prostatitis?

How can it be classified?

A

Inflammation of the prostate, which may be caused by infection

It can be classified as acute (infective) or chronic (may be infective/non infective)

What are the symptoms of prostatitis?

A

Local infection:

  • Pelvic pain
  • LUTS
  • Pain when opening bowels

Systemic infection:
- Features of sepsis, e.g. fever

What are the causes of acute prostatitis?

A
  • Recent prostate biopsy
  • Recent UTI
  • STI

Describe the management of acute bacterial prostatitis

A
  • Hospital admission if systemically unwell/features of sepsis
  • Antibiotics (ciprofloxacin is first line)
  • Analgesia
