What is prostatitis?
How can it be classified?
A
Inflammation of the prostate, which may be caused by infection
It can be classified as acute (infective) or chronic (may be infective/non infective)

What are the symptoms of prostatitis?
A
Local infection:
- Pelvic pain
- LUTS
- Pain when opening bowels
Systemic infection:
- Features of sepsis, e.g. fever

What are the causes of acute prostatitis?
A
- Recent prostate biopsy
- Recent UTI
- STI

Describe the management of acute bacterial prostatitis
A
- Hospital admission if systemically unwell/features of sepsis
- Antibiotics (ciprofloxacin is first line)
- Analgesia

What are the potential complications of prostatitis?
A
- Abscess
- Sepsis
- Acute urinary retention
