Inflammation of the epididymis and testicle, usually as a result of infection
Which micro-organisms typically cause epididymo-orchitis?
- E. coli
- Chlamydia trachomatis
- Neisseria gonorrhoea
- Mumps (tends to just cause orchitis)
Describe the clinical presentation of epididymo-orchitis
Symptoms/signs of inflammation, which come on gradually over minutes to hours:
- Redness
- Pain
- Hot to touch
- Swelling

Which initial investigations should be done in a patient presenting with epididymo-orchitis?
- Urine MC&S
- Chlamydia and gonorrhoea NAAT on first pass urine
- Saliva swab if suspecting mumps
How would you manage an acutely unwell patient with epididymo-orchitis?
- ABCDE assessment
- Hospital admission
- IV antibiotics according to local guidelines
