What are the uses and pharmacological action of prostaglandins
A
- GI tract: reduces gastric acid secretion and increases the creation of mucus and prevents NSAID induced ulcers
- CVS: maintains the patency of ductus arteriosus before surgery. decreases peripheral, pulmonary and coronary resistance. Used to treat hypertension. Pulmonary hypertension
- Platelets: inhibits platelet aggregation
- Eye: decrease intraocular tension. Used in glaucoma
- Uterus: contract pregnant uterus, abortion, induction of labor, cervical priming, postpartum haemorrhage
- Male reproductive system: useful in treatment of erectile disfunction
