Properties of Metals_Definitions Flashcards
Alkali metal
A Group 1 Metal - Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs and Fr
Brittle
Shatters when given a sharp tap
Cations
A positively charged Ion
Core Charge
The effective nuclear charge experienced by the outer shell electrons in an atom. It indicates the attractive force felt by the valence electrons towards the nucleus
Ductile
Able to to be drawn into a wire
Ionisation Energy
The energy required to remove one electron from an atom on an element in the gas phase
Lattice
A regular arrangement of large numbers of atomes, ions or molicules
Malleable
Able to be bent or beaten into sheets
Octet Rule
A rule used as part of the explanation for electron configuration and in bonding. The rule is that during a chemical reaction, atoms tend to lose, gain or share their valen electrons so that there are eight electrons in the outer shell
Tensile Strength
The maximum resistance of a material to a fforce which is pulling it appart before breaking, measured as the maximum stress the material can withstand without tearing
Transition Metals
An Element in Groups 3-12 in the periodic table
