Modifying Metals_Key Questions Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 3 ways a metal can be modified?
A
- Through Alloy Production - by Heat Treatment - With a Coating
2
Q
How do you make an Alloy?
A
- When metals are mixed with small amounts of another substance, and then melted together and allowed to cool, the resultant solid is an Alloy
3
Q
What are other characteristics of an Alloy?
A
- an Alloy is generally harder and melts at a lower temperature than the pure metal - an Alloy has improved properties When compared to the original metal.
4
Q
How is Steel made?
A
- All the iron mined around the world is used to make the Alloy Steel - Usually made by adding a small amount of carbon to the iron
5
Q
What is Work Hardening?
A
- Hammering cold metals causes the crystals to rearrange as they are pushed and deformed. This can result in hardening of the metal as the crystals are flattened out and pushed closer together. Eg: Hammering a gold ring around a round tool to harden it
