Ionic Bonding_Definitions Flashcards
Anion
A negaively charged ion eg: a chloride ion CI-
Brittle
Shatters when given a sharp tap
Cations
A positively charged Ion
Ceramic
A material that is produced by the firing of clay
Chemical Formula
A representation of a substance using symbolsfor its constituant elements. Shows the ratio of atoms present in the substance
Crystal Lattice
The symmetrical three-dimensional arrangement of atoms or ions inside a crystal
Dissolve
To incorporate a soli or gas into a liquid so as to form a solution
Electrolysis
The production of a reaction by the passage of electrical energy from a power supply through a conducting liquid
Electrolyte
A solution or molton substance that conducts electricty by mean of the movement of ions.
Electron Transfer Diagram
A diagram that shows how electrons move from a metal atom to a non-metal form
Electrovalency
The charge on a ion
Empirical Formula
A formula that shows the simplest whol number ratio of the elements in a compound eg: CH is the empirical formula for C3H6 (can’t get the 3 and 6 lower)
Gemstone
A precious stone that is usually ionic in structure
Ionic Bonding
A type of chemical bonding that involves the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions
Ionic Compound
A type of chemical compound that involves the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions
Non-polar solvent
A liquid or solvent that is a compound of two or more elements whose electronegatives are almost the same. Eg: Oil
Octet rule
A rule used as part of the explanation for electron configuration and in bonding. The rule is that during a chemical reaction, atoms tend to lose, gain or share their valen electrons so that there are eight electrons in the outer shell
Polyatomic ion
An ion that is made up of more than one element eg: Carbonate ion CO3(lower)2-(Upper)
Salinity
The presence of Salt in water and soil that can damage plants or inhibit their growth
