Carbon Lattices & Nanomaterials_Definitions Flashcards
Allotropes
Different forms of the same-element.
Amorphous
A structure that has no consistent arrangement of particals.
Biochar
Charcoal produced from plant matter and stored in the soil
Buckyball
A ball like molecule consisting of carbon atoms of the type found in fullerenes
Combustion
A rapid reaction with oxygen accompanied by the release of large amounts of heat; Also called burning.
Covalent Layer Lattice
An arrangement of atoms in a lattice in whcihc there are strong covalent bonds between the atimes that have formed in a layer
Covalent Network Lattice
An arrangement of atoms in a lattice in which there are strong covalent bonds between the atoms in all three dimensons
Diamond
A form of pure carbon that is the hardest naturally occurring substance
Fullerene
A molecule composed entirely of carbon in the form of a hollow sphere or tube. Each carbon atom is boned to three other carbon atoms
Graphene
A form of carbon consisting of planar sheets one atom thick in which each carbon atom is bonded to three neighbouring carbon atoms.
Graphite
A form of carbon in which the carbon atoms are arranged in layers
Nanomaterial
A material with nanoscule features
NanoTube
An allotrope of carbon that consists of layers of carbon atoms formed into a long cylinder
Photovoltaic Cell
A device constructed from a specialised semiconducter that can produce a flow of electrons from light energy
Sublimation
to turn from a solid directly into a gas (bypasses liquid phase)
