Properties Of Metals Flashcards
Ferrous
Metals containing iron
Non-ferrous metals
Metals not containing iron
Alloys
A mixture of 2 or more metals
Cast iron
.Very strong
.Brittle
.Non malleable
Used in vices, car brake discs, manhole covers
Low-carbon steel
.Strong and cheap
.Rusts easily
.Cannot be hardened
Car bodies,screws,nuts,bolts,nails and washing machines
High-carbon steel
.Hard and cannot be hardened
.Not easy to work with
.Can rust
Used in tools,chisels,files,saws,drills
Aluminium
.Lightweight and corrosion resistance .Expensive .Not as strong as steel .Hard to join Used in aeroplanes, cans, ladders
Copper
.Relatively soft
.Malleable and Ductile
.Good electrical conductor
Used in electrical wires and pipes
Tin
.Soft .Corrosion resistant .Malleable And Ductile .low melting point Used in foil, tin cans and solder metals
Zinc
.Not very strong and corrosion resistant
Used in coating steel (nails buckets and watering cans)
High Speed Steel
.Contains iron and 0.6% carbon and other metals such as tungsten
.Keeps it’s hardness when heated
Used in high speed cutting tools that get hot due to friction
Stainless Steel
.Iron,carbon,chromium and nickel
.Adding these metals increases strength, toughness, ductility and decreases rust.
Used in surgical equipment, sinks and cutlery
Brass
.Hard and Strong
.Malleable,ductile and good electrical conductor
.Resistant to corrosion
