Manufactured Boards
A group of materials that have been created by combining natural woods with modern materials and adhesives.
Plywood
Made from thin sheets of wood called veneers which are glued together so that the grain of each layer aternates by 90 degrees. It is strong in all directions and is commonly used in worktops,drawer bottoms and construction
MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard)
Made from small fibres of wood that are compressed and glued together. The wood can have a smooth waxy finish or can be covered in plastic or hardwood veneer. Does not warp easily and cuts and planes well without splitting. Used in tabletops worksurfaces cupboards and veneered furniture
Blockboard
Made from strips of softwood which are glued together and sandwiched between 2 layers of hardwood. This wood is strong rigid and heavy and hard to finish the edges. Used in stage flooring and fire doors
Hardboard
Made by compressing and gluing pulped wood together. It is smooth on one side and rough on the other. The wood is weak and can warp easily as well as needs a finish applied. Commonly used in door panels drawer bottoms and cabinet backs
