Properties Of Materials Flashcards
What is strength
Is the ability to withstand forces without breaking
What is hardness
The ability to withstand scratching abrasion or denting
What is toughness
If a material is hard to break or snap
What is elasticity
Materials that can be stretched and bent and return to their original shape
What is malleability
Materials that can be bent and shaped
What is ductility
Materials that can be drawn into a wire
What is electrical conductivity
Materials that can allow electricity to travel through them easily ie metals are good but plastics aren’t
What is thermal conductivity
Materials that let heat travel through them easily
What is fusibility
Materials that have a low melting point
What is density
Density is the measure of mass per unit. Measured in kg/m3
What is absorbency
Materials that are good at soaking up moisture such as fibres and fabrics
Non metal properties
. Brittle . Not always a solid at room temperature . Poor electrical conductors . Dull looking . Low density
Metal properties
. Strong
. Malleable
. Good conductors of heat AND electricity
. Have high boiling and melting points
What is an alloy
Alloys are a mixture of 2 or more metals not chemically combined
