Forces And Stresses Flashcards
Tension
Is to stretch an object by pulling. Examples of this are tug of war and cables on suspension bridges
Compression
Compressive forces are a squashing force. Examples of this are legs in a chair and bridge supports
Shear
Is a force where objects slide past one another. Examples of this are scissors and guillotines
Bending
A force which causes an object to bend. Examples of this are bending a ruler.
Torsion
Is a twisting force. An example of this is a screwdriver and testicular torsion
Static force
Is a force applied while an object is stationary
Dynamic Force
Is a force which causes a stationary object to change in direction size or gravitational force.
Tensile strength
How much tension an object can withstand without breaking
Compressive force
How much an object can withstand compression without folding on itself
