Q

What are the properties of the centre block of metals?

A
  • Strong and bendable ⇒ Good for building bridges and car bodies.
  • ideal if you need heat to travel through e.g saucepan.
  • conductivity makes it great for electrical wiring.

Q

What can happen to metals when they are stressed and strained?

A

This is known as metal fatigue and leads to metals breaking, which can be very dangerous e.g. planes.

Q

What are the specific properties of copper?

A
  • good conductor of electricity
  • hard and strong but can be bent
  • doesn’t react with water.

Great for plumbing (pipes) as it is below hydrogen and does not react with water.

Q

When do some metals corrode?

A

When they are exposed to air and wtaer.

They need to be protected e.g. by painting .

If metals corrode they lose their strength.

Q

Whatare the specific properties of aluminium?

A
  • corrosion-resistant
  • low density

Pure aluminium isn’t particularly strong, but it forms hard, strong alloys.

Building planes because it is strong and can be bent to shape. Also needs to be lightweight.

Q

What are the specific properties of titanium?

A
  • Low density metal
  • very strong
  • corrosion-resistant

Use: Replacement hips as it does not corrode when it comes into water. Also light and not to bendy.
