Compounds. Flashcards
1
Q
What is a chemical bond?
A
When different elements react with other atoms to form compounds.
It is usually difficult to seperate the two elemts out again.
2
Q
What does making bonds involve?
A
Atoms giving away, taking or sharing electrons.
3
Q
What does a compound formed from a metal and non metal consist of?
A
Ions.
- The metal atoms lose electrons to form positive ions.
- The non metals atoms gain electrons form a negative ions.
- The opposite charges (positive and negative) of the ions mean they’re strongly attracted to eachother. This is called ionic bonding.
Eg. A sodium atom gives an electron to a chlorine atom.
4
Q
What does a compound from formed from non-metals consist of?
A
Molecules.
- Each atom shares an electron with another atom- this is called a covalent bond.
- Each atom has to make enough covalent bonds to fill up the outer shell.
5
Q
What are the properties of compounds?
A
- Properties of compound are different to those of elements.
Example:
If iron and sulphur react, the compound formed (iron sulfide) is a dull grey solid lump and doesnt behave anything like sulphur or iron.
- Compounds can be small molecules like water or a lattice like sodium chloride.
