Properties and uses of crude oil Flashcards
What are their different properties based on?
They have different structure and therefore different properties.
What is crude oil mostly made out of?
Alkanes
What are the first four alkanes?
Methane, ethane, propane, butane.
Monkeys eat peanut butter
What is the general formula for alkanes?
CnH2n+2
How many bonds does carbon form?
4
How many bonds does hydrogen form?
1
What are the trends for hydrocarbons?
1) The shorter the molecule, the less viscous it is.
2) The shorter the molecule, the more volatile it is. (turn into gas at a lower temperature)
3) The shorter the molecule, the more flammable it is.
What does a hydrocarbon’s viscosity help decide?
For eg a very viscous hydrocarbon can be used for lubricating engine parts.
What is crude oil used as?
Fuels, plastics etc
Pros and cons of using crude oil?
Pros: Things are ‘set up’ for crude oil already, easiest and cheapest to use, more reliable.
Cons: It’s non-renewable (will run out), oil spills, contributes to global warming, acid rain and global dimming.
