Cracking Crude Oil Flashcards
1
Q
What is cracking?
A
Cracking is the splitting up of long-chain hydrocarbons into smaller, more useful hydrocarbons.
2
Q
What can diesel be cracked into?
A
Petrol, paraffin and ethene.
3
Q
What kind of reaction is cracking?
A
A thermal decomposition reaction, breaking down by heat.
4
Q
What are the steps for the complicated way of cracking?
A
- Heat the long chain hydrocarbon until it is vaporised( turns to gas)
- Pass the vapour over a powdered catalyst aluminium oxide) at temperatures like 400°C-700°C.
- Long chains crack on the surface of catalyst.
5
Q
What is the catalyst used in cracking?
A
Aluminium oxide
6
Q
What are the products of cracking?
A
Alkanes and alkenes.
7
Q
What is the alternative way of cracking long chain hydrocarbons?
A
- Heat long chain hydrocarbon until vaporised.
2. Mix vapour with steam at VERY HIGH TEMPERATURES
