properties of flyers and leaflets
- single sheet printed material on a lightweight, low grade paper stock
- leaflets usually folded or tri-folded and are typically a higher quality print product containing more information which may be kept
- both can be produced on biodegradable and recyclable paper
why does packaging that that have treatments or coatings often end up in a landfill
it is difficult and expensive to separate the materials - eg: aluminium or wax
packaging for food
- cardboard needs to be strong, waterproof, non-toxic, suitable for printing on and airtight
- card will need to be treated to improve functionality and be waterproof or greaseproof.
- card coated with plastics or aluminium to prevent leakage, entry of light and air or to retain heat
- corrugated cardboard adds rigidity and helps retain heat. it is lightweight and can be stacked - pizza boxes
modification of properties: paper towels
- can be treated with resins to retain the towel’s structure when wet to prevent tearing and increase absorbency
modification of properties: baking parchment
pulp is passed through sulfuric acid to gelatinise the surface, making it non stick
modification of properties: white board
stiff board with a wax coating or laminated with polyethene makes it suitable as a container for take-away food
advantages of flat pack furniture
boards are cheaper than natural woods, can be finished with veneers to give different surface finishes and colours
disadvantages of flat pack furniture
flat pack furniture chips easily when knocked
will distort or swell when it gets wet
what do children’s toys need to be and why
-must be durable as they will be dropped, knocked and thrown
-should resist splintering
hardwoods that are hard and durable such as oak and beech are used for toy making. -> smooth surface, easily painted, can be sanded
