ecological and social footprint Flashcards
1
Q
what are product miles
A
number of miles a product travels from all stages of manufacture through to its final retail destination
2
Q
social factors
A
- using materials from sustainable resources
- sourcing materials that have a positive impact on farmers and workers
- reducing the use of unethically sourced materials that harm the environment
- using recycled products
3
Q
safe working conditions:
Health and safety at work act 1974
A
- workers should be provided with safe work conditions, given training and appropriate safety equipment for their environment
- safe working hours, fair wages and working conditions
- not all countries provide the same production, low paid workers may be exploited
4
Q
order of the 6rs
A
rethink refuse reduce reuse repair recycle
5
Q
why is the order of the 6rs like that
A
it is better to rethink and refuse to use a product at all as it saves having to consider any of the points thereafter. repair involves new parts that reuse does not
6
Q
how can we reduce atmospheric pollution
A
- switching from petrol and diesel vehicles to electric
- reducing the number of journeys made
- improving the recycling of materials used to produce cars and trucks
- increased use of alternative forms of energy such as solar
- using energy efficient lighting and appliances
7
Q
how can we reduce oceanic pollution
A
- using plastic free alternatives and saying no to single use plastic bags such as straws, cups, and plastic bags
- urge producers to make plastic free containers and packaging.
- utilise biodegradable materials and eliminate micro-beads
- reduce our carbon footprint as increased green hosue gases are making the ocean more acidic and sea levels rise
- significantly increase recycling to reduce waste being dumped in the ocean
