What are some examples of sexual infections?
- Chlamydia
- HIV
- Pubic lice
- Gonorrhoea
- Genital warts
- Syphilis

What are some symptoms of sexual infections?
- Unusual discharge
- Itches/rashes/blisters
- Pain/bleeding during/after sex, or when urinating
- Pain in lower abdomen/lower testicles
- Bleeding between periods (spotting)
What can women develop if they have chlamydia?
PID (Pelvic inflammatory disorder) - leading to infertility
What type of infection is chlamydia?
Bacterial (from C. Trachomatis)
Where in the body is chlamydia found in those infected?
Semen & vaginal fluids.
What screening programme is used to test for chlamydia?
NCSP - National Chlamydia Screening Programme.
What testing procedures are done to test for chlamydia?
- Swab of the cervix or urethra
- Urine test
- Rectum/throat swab for anal/oral sex
What is the 1st line treatment for chlamydia?
Clamelle (azithromycin) 500mg tablets, or 1g single dose.
What is the second line treatment for chlamydia?
Doxycycline 100mg BD for 7 days
What should the pharmacist say to a patient who is being treated for chlamydia?
- No sex must be performed a week after completing treatment
- Partner must be treated too
When does pregnancy begin?
At the point of implantation, which is around 5-7 days after fertilisation.
When are emergency contraceptives used?
- Condom breakage
- Forgotten pills
- Unprotected sex
- Penetration but no ejaculation
When should levonorgestrel (Levonelle) be given?
Within 72h (3 days)
What is the mechanism of Levonelle?
It prevents/delays ovulation
When should EllaOne be given?
Within 120h (5 days)
