Diagnostic Tests of PROM

Ferning : discharge appears fern like
Pooling: filling of speculum with amniotic fluid
INVESTIGATIONS FOR PROM
FBC (WBC important)
C-reactive protein
Clotting profile if there is infection
Do ultrasound for
• Liquor volume/ amniotic fluid index (AFI)
• Fetal well-being
• Fetal lie and presentation
• Placental location
Conservative Management of PROM( Gestation <34wks)
• Admit pt and monitor for signs of infection (check wbc, c reactive protein,uterine tenderness)
• Prophylactic Antibiotics
• Tocolytics
•Steroids (prevents RDS, NEC, Intraventricular hemorrhage, neonatal morbidity

Increase C/S rate
