What is the definition of prolonged pregnancy?

Exceeding 42 weeks gestation

What are the problems associated with prolonged pregnancy?
A
- Stillbirth
- Increased neonatal death
- Macrosomia, shoulder dystocia, foetal injury
- Ossified foetal skill = less mouldable
- Increased meconium passage in labour and foetal distress

How is prolonged pregnancy managed?
A
- Confirm EDD, arrange for visit at 41/40 if not delivered.
- Membrane sweep on vaginal examination - induces natural prostaglandins
- Vaginal prostaglandins followed by oxytocin
