Depressive symptoms relating to new born child (guilt, feeling of failure, hopelessness).

Postnatal depression

How is postnatal depression managed?
A
- Screen with Edinburgh postnatal depression scale
- Manage as for depression (fluoxetine preferred)
- Admit if suicidal or infanticidal ideation

Fortnight after child birth, rapid onset of psychotic symptoms, insomnia, restlessness, mania.

Puerperal psychosis

How is puerperal psychosis managed?
A
Admission to a mother baby unit required.
