Project Questions Flashcards
[cartwheel] Which type of practice do you think would have been more beneficial for children (part or whole)?
- Part: some children might be scared to do the whole task, easier to break up task when they are younger. Child has problems inverting or shifting weight. Move this person as quickly into whole practice as possible.
- Whole: if they are fearless, it is better to make them do whole practice
[cartwheel] Do you think pre learned motor programs may have made this skill easier or more difficult to learn as an adult?
- Having good balance
- Being used to tucking in vs. straightening limbs
[cartwheel] More examples of when a pre learned motor skill can negatively transfer to learning other skills?
- Swing of baseball to golf
- Volleyball 3 foot approach vs. long jump (2 foot jump)
[racquetball] When you don’t get the results that you expect, what factors could have impacted the results? What would the coach have to look at?
- Experience
- Fatigue
- More fatigue = less motivation
- Deliberate practice: how many of all reps were deliberate
[LH football throw] why did variable practice work better?
- One had more experience
- May have been transfer of learning from right arm to left arm
- Practice structure: maybe variable practice is better
- Deliberate practice
[Water Pong] Do you think it would be beneficial for adolescents to use this skill as a way of learning within sports?
transferability
[Water Pong] What abilities might have made Shae more successful?
- Height
- Sight
- Past experience
[Pool] Do you think that playing in a public place affected their results?
People are distracting
[Pool] Why do you think that contextual interference plays a role in their project for constant practice?
- get comfortable/bored with doing one style of shot and takes time to get used to the next shot
- Usually see better performance in practice (at one location)
- Takes time to realize they’re switching shots
[Pool] Why do you think that contextual interference plays a role in their project for varied practice?
- constantly changing styles, doesn’t take time to adjust from one to another
- Not as good at a single location
- Look at not only the retention and pre test but look at practice data
[chopsticks] Name some factors that may have affected performance in the retention test.
- Height of the table
- Motivation
- Hand getting sore
[Chopsticks] Do you think it’s easy to learn a skill with prior experience with a non dominant hand as opposed to no prior experience with non dominant hand?
- yes
- transferability
[non dominant overhand throw] What could have improved their performance?
- More trials
- Longer experiment
- More test subjects
- Figure out a way of assessing the performance and improving the performance
[non dominant overhand throw] Provide evidence of why slow motion training of a motor skill would be helpful.
- same general motor plan
- more brain engagement in slow motion
- throwing slow motion only changes how the GMP is expressed, not the plan itself
- ex. record player. Slowing down doesn’t change the song
[juggling] Why would a combination of both mental and physical practice be more beneficial to a learner than just one or the other?
- Confidence booster: can do anything in your head
- Good tool to help focus the learner
- Fatigue. Some of the things we do can be physically fatiguing
