Progress test 2 revision Flashcards
What parts of a neuron lies in the conduction zone? And what is its function?
Axon. Its function is to carry electrical signals between brain areas to and from the spinal cord, or from peripheral sensory receptors and to effector cells.
What part of a neuron lies inside the summation zone? And what is its function?
Axon Hillock. Summation of inputs.
What parts of a neuron lie inside the input zone? And what is its function?
Dendrites and Cell body. Receives chemical signals from other neurons.
Name for a group of cell bodies in the PNS
Ganglion
Name for a group of cell bodies in the cerebral cortex or spinal cord
Grey matter
Name for a bundle of axons in CNS
Tract
Name for a group of cell bodies in the CNS
Nucleus
What is autonomic information transmitted?
The stuff we are not aware of, and have no control over. Autonomic efferent - Involuntary muscle control
Autonomic afferent - Sensory information we don’t know about
What is somatic information transmitted?
The stuff we aware of and have control over
Somatic efferent - voluntary muscle control
Somatic afferent - Sensory information we are aware of
Name for information that goes into brain. And information that comes out of the brain.
Into - afferent
Out of - Efferent
What are the nodes of ranvier? And what is its function?
Gaps between myelin. Increase conduction velocity
What is the myelin sheath? And where does it come from in PNS and CNS?
Lipid (fat) wrapped around axon.
CNS - oligodendrocytes
PNS - Schwann cells
Two features of oligodendrocytes
Support Nerve fibers. Ensheath them with myelin
Two features of epidermal cells
Line fluid filled spaces of brain and spinal cord. Have cilia to circulate cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)
Two features of microglia
Immune cells of the CNS. Engulf microorganisms and debris
