What is the problem with re-entrant corners in seismic zones
Each portion of the building twists out of phase with the other
What are the 3 S’s for dealing with re-entrant corners in seismic zones?
Separate
Stiffen
Strengthen
What is loam?
A soil that contains sand, silt and clay.
Can loam soil support a building?
Yes - it is competent enough to support a building
What type of soil can support a building?
Gravel, clay, shale and sand or ‘OK’
Rock (bedrock, limestone, sandstone) are best
What type of soil cannot support a building?
Peat and organic soil
What is ‘ net present value’?
An aspect of life cycle cost analysis
What are ASTM E 1527 and ASTM E 1903 standards for?
ESA Phase I and ESA Phase II
What does ASHRAE 55 cover?
Thermal comfort
What does ASHRAE 62 cover?
Ventilation and IAQ
What does ASHRAE 90.1 cover?
Energy and lighting
What is a detention pond?
Holds water during a storm and lets it seep back out slowly. Only wet during a storm. Dry inbetween.
What is a retention pond?
Holds water during and storm and is always wet.
What is a bioswale?
Ecologically thought through detention pond.
It is essentially a vegetated detention pond.
What is a cistern?
Underground containers for paving runoff of roof runoff.
What is “bank-measure”?
Amount of earth in it’s natural state
What is “loose-measure”?
Amount of earth in transport
What is “compacted-measure”?
Amount of earth compacted
What is shrink and swell state a factor of?
Bank measure
What is the angle at which we change the position of a PV on a roof to optimize it for either summer or winter?
15 degrees
What is the angle at which we modify solar orientation calculations in solar studies?
23.5 degrees
Do we lower or raise a PV by x degrees for summer months?
Lower by 15 degrees
Do we lower or raise a PV by x degrees for winter months?
Raise by 15 degrees
When should you use horizontal louvers?
When shading the south side of a building
When should you use vertical louvers?
When shading the east and west side of a building
What is the minimum slope for swales to prevent standing water?
1% or 1/100
What is the maximum cross slope for ADA walkways?
2% or 1/48
What is the maximum slope for accessible ramps?
1/20 or 5%
What is unique about a civil engineer?
They can be hired by either Architect or Owner.
Unlike Geotech which is always hired by the owner
What is riprap?
Large boulders and rocks used for erosion control
What is the plastic limit?
% of moisture at which soil goes from solid to sqiushy
What is the water limit?
% of moisture at which soil becomes liquid
What is phytoremediation?
Using plants in the ground to aid in the breakdown of SVOCs.
Slow
What is soil vapor extraction?
Wells dug into ground and the VOCs are vacuumed out via a pump above ground.
What is a benefit to soil vapor extraction?
It can occur while the site is occupied
What is bioremediation?
Injection of micro-organisms into the ground to aid in the breakdown of VOCs, SVOC and inorganic materials
What is the mnemonic we use for remembering crime prevention?
Sure, Volvo cars look truly exquisite, Violet
What are the measures for enacting good crime prevention?
Sure, Volvo cars look truly exquisite, Viola
Surveillance (passive and active)
Visibility

What are the 3 main tenants of defensible space design?
SAT
Surveillance
Access
Territory
How many SF are in an acre?
43,560
4 down 1 to 3
5 up 1 to 6
Or 66 * 660
Or 7-11

What is “unit-in-place” valuatoin?
What it would cost to replace a building if it disappeared tomorrow
What is “historical cost approach”?
Assume it’s still worth what you paid for it 15 years ago
What is the difference between “unit-in-place” and “unit rate”?
Unit-in-place is more for property valuation
