What is a production aid?
Tools and techniques used to aid production
What is a reference point?
A point where measurements are made from. E.g. corner of an object.
They help to control accuracy.
What is a datum?
The point where x, y and z meet
Why are templates needed?
They are easy to make and use, you can draw round or cut round them to produce a shape that is identical to the original product. It makes the products consistent.
What qualities do templates need to be functioning?
It should be accurate to make sure that the batch of components are all accurate.
They need to be strong and hard-wearing, so that they can be used repetitively without getting damaged or worn.
Why are patterns used in textiles?
They are templates used to cut out pieces of fabric, which are then sawn together to make a textiles product.
What are patterns in textiles often made from?
Tissue paper, and pinned to a fabric so that they can be cut around.
How are patterns used in the textiles industry?
CAM cutting machines are used to cut the fabric, after the patterns are drawn out using CAD.
The coordinates of the pattern’s outline are then used to tell the machine how to cut the pieces of fabric.
What is casting, and how are pattern used in casting?
Casting is the forming of a material into a particular shape. This shape is determined by a pattern - which is an exact replica of the object you want to recreate.
What are patterns made from in casting?
Materials such as resin, wood and metal.
Why are patterns important in casting
They can be used many times to make moulds that are used in the casting process and make products that are a consistent shape.
What is the role of a jig?
It guides the tools that are working on a component, or makes sure that the workpiece is positioned in the right place for machining.
What are the qualities of a jig?
They come in many different shapes and sizes and can be specifically made for a particular job.
Why are jigs important?
They speed up production and simplify the making process.
What does using a drilling jig mean?
It means you don’t have to mark out exactly where you want to drill - saving time and effort.
It guides the drill, meaning that you can cut down on errors, and makes sure that components are consistent.
What does using a dovetail jog mean?
Allows complex dovetail joints to be cut quickly, easily and with minimal measuring and marking out.
