Boards Flashcards
What are manufactured boards?
Where processes wood is combined with glue and compresses into panels.
Properties of Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF)
Made from tiny fibres of softwood timber held together by glue, meaning it has no natural grain.
Cheap, dense, smooth uniform surface that takes paint (and other finishes) well.
Porous, so damaged by moisture.
Uses of MDF
Shelves, flat-pack furniture
Properties of Plywood
Made up of several layers of softwood or hardwood, glued together with their grains at right angles to one another.
Very strong for its weight and thickness.
Uses of plywood
Building and furniture
Properties of chipboard
Made by compressing wood chips, shavings and sawdust together with glue.
Used with a veneered surface, cheap, but not strong.
Absorbent so easily damaged by moisture.
Uses of chipboard
Cheap self-assembly furniture
