Name the 5 steps to applying Top Dressing Mix
“How do I apply Top Dressing to my lawn?”
To spread top dressing on a lawn, first prepare the lawn by mowing and dethatching if necessary. Then, spread the top dressing evenly over the lawn using a shovel, compost spreader, or broadcast spreader, aiming for a depth of about 1/4 to 1/2 inch. Finally, use a push broom or leveling rake to work the top dressing into the grass and water the lawn to help it settle.
Here Are The Detailed Steps:
1.Prepare the Lawn: Mow the lawn to a desired height and remove any thatch (dead grass and organic matter).
2.Apply Top Dressing: ◦ Using a Shovel:Distribute the top dressing in small piles across the lawn and then spread it evenly with a shovel. ◦ Using a Compost Spreader:Adjust the settings on the spreader and apply the top dressing to the desired depth. ◦ Using a Broadcast Spreader:Ensure the spreader is calibrated to your desired application rate and spread the top dressing evenly.
3.Level and Work In ◦ Push Broom or Leveling Rake
Use a push broom to gently push the top dressing into the grass, ensuring that it is worked into the root zone. ◦ Leveling Rake:A leveling rake can help to distribute the top dressing more evenly and smooth out any uneven areas.
A lawn leveling rake is a tool with a wide, flat head designed to smooth and level lawns, especially after topdressing or aeration. It’s essentially a large, flat rake that helps distribute and settle materials like topsoil or compost, creating a more even surface. (NOT a normal Rake)
4.Water the Lawn:
Water the lawn thoroughly to help the top dressing settle into the soil and promote grass growth.
5.Avoid Mowing:
It’s best to avoid mowing for at least a week after top dressing to allow the top dressing to settle and the grass to recover.
