Advanced Knowledge Flashcards
What does ASTM in “ASTM Certified” playground mulch stand for?
American Society for Testing and Materials
Are there any concerns about Asian Jumping Worms in your mulch?
There is no concern because our mulch is processed at 140-160F, which kills any cocoons or worms. Additionally, mulch is not stored long enough to pose a risk.
There’s yellow mold growing on my mulch. What is it?
It’s likely a slime mold, also known as “dog vomit,” which feeds on decomposing matter and is beneficial for soil health.
How many bags does 1 yard of mulch equal?
Approximately 13 bags
The average person orders 3 to 5 yards of mulch that is the equivalent to 40 bags of mulch.
We deliver. No need to carry 40 bags back and forth from the store.
What is the formula or calculation for finding how many cubic yards of product or mulch I need?
Multiply the length, width, and depth (in feet) of the area, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards.
Explanation: You can also direct customers to our Yardage Calculator on the website.
“My mulch has ‘shotgun’ mold growing from it, now theres black dots all over the side of my house and car. How can I remedy this?”
Prevention and Management
To minimize the risk of artillery fungus in mulch:
1.Use bark mulch or cedar mulch, which are more resistant to the fungus.
2.Hardwood mulches are more susceptible, regardless of the quality in product, if conditions are right it can occur.
3.Keep mulch dry by stirring it regularly. The fungus prefers wet, cool conditions, being most active during spring and fall, and less so in hot summer months.
4.The Shotgun spores can exist in previous beds of mulch despite applying a new layer.
5. Consider blending mushroom compost into landscape mulch, 40% mix can result in 95% suppression of Shotgun or “artillery” fungus sporulation.
Artillery fungus can be unsightly or difficult to remove once its adhered to surfaces but it does NOT cause structural damage and is not harmful to humans or pets.
Communicate to the customer that we have a soil scientist who will be looking into this, in the mean time those suggestions can help. The easiest method to remove Shotgun Spores is to use a product called ‘Magic Eraser’ - which is a special sponge that rubs the spores off. Most soaps, and chemical solutions aren’t very effective.
