Process theodicy Flashcards
What is the process theodicy
•Created by whitehead and David griffin.
•God is not omnipotent and did not create the universe because the universe is an uncreated process that God is a part of this is a never ending process when there is harmony there is good and when there is chaos there is evil.
•God is “dipolar” meaning he has one physical pole on earth and one mental pole in the heavens.
•God suffers when we do and helps people to live in the best way. He started evolution but did not create universe
•Not responsible for evil
Criticism: not a genuine theodicy
As process theodicy says God is not omnipotent many traditonal theists reject it in favour of Augustine because it doesn’t align with classical theism
Criticism: God is responsible as he started evolution
Saying God is not responsible for evil because he only started evolution and cannot intervene is like saying an arms dealer is not responsible for a conflict as he only supplied the weapons and cannot withdraw them
Strengths
Allows God to avoid responsibility for evil as he is powerless to do so
More attractive to a secular society where an intervening divine being is hard to accept in the face of scientific evidence
