Problem of evil (Theodicies) Flashcards

Q

JL Mackies inconsistent triad

A

God can be omnipotent and not care about the existence of evil.
God can be omnibenevolent and not have the ability to stop evil. This means God is malevolent. God cannot be omnipotent and omnibenevolent while evil exists.

Q

Evidential problem of evil-William L. Rowe (inductive in nature)

A

William L. Rowe’s example of natural evil: “In some distant forest lightning strikes a dead tree, resulting in a forest fire. In the fire a fawn is trapped, horribly burned, and lies in terrible agony for several days before death relieves its suffering.“
Rowe also cites the example of human evil where an innocent child is a victim of violence and thereby suffers.

Q

Logical problem of evil (deductive in nature)

A

If God is omnipotent he has the ability to abolish evil.
If God is omnibenevolent he has the desire to abolish evil.
If God is omniscient he both knows of all evil and how to abolish all evil.
Evil exists.
Therefore an omnipotent, omnibenevolent and omniscient God does not exit.
