2)Finance- Debt
Owe 50% debt to antwerp exchange at 14% p/a
Customs tax increase £29 000 - £81 000 in 1558 -(due to a new Book of Rates introduced by Mary)
1558 - Elizabeth inherited debts of £227000 - 8 million now
1571 – prices 141% higher than they had been in 1500.
1571 - £44 000 had been borrowed and lost from the Exchequer, stop process
Bishoprics left empty (Ely 19 years. Oxford 41 of the 45 years)
1576 debt clear
1584 England had a surplus of £300000

1588 -England still at war with france
French Scottish alliance – threat as want mary scotts queen — claim would be reduced if catholic
Due to the Spanish alliance, England is £227000 in debt and has lost Calais. There is a chance England will get Calais back if Elizabeth marries Philip II.
3rd April 1559- The Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis - was a series of peace agreements between France, England and Spain,- ends Italian war signed.
Elizabeth wanted no peace without regaining Calais – Agreed france would keep Calais 8 years then return it if no tension
Solves short term - less succesful long term, Mary stuarts arrival on may 13th 1568

-1562 (Oct)- Liz gets really ill with smallpox – leads to petitions in 1559 and 1562 to name an heir
1566 (Nov)- 1566- Robert Bell makes an petition she must marry and name an hier
Feb 8th 1576 - Trouble in Parliament over free Speech – Peter wentworth crisises how no heir is named
1579 (Aug)- Courtship of Alencon – John stubbs writes pamphlets opposing it [xenophobia], has hand cur of for sedition—so not marrying is logical
Nov 4th 1579 - stubbs hand cut of for sedition
1591- Peter wentworth presents how Elizabeth will live in infamy if she doesn’t marry or name an heir – dealt with – dies in tower in 1597
