1) Mary Stuart
Arrives on may 13th 1568
Causes northern rebellion to change sucession
November 9, 1569 – The rebellion begins . Earls of Northumberland (Thomas Percy) and Westmorland (Charles Neville).
November 14, 1569 – The rebels march south
November 16, 1569 – The rebels capture Durham. 600 mass
November 23, 1569 – The rebellion advances toward York, but Queen Elizabeth I sends forces to suppress the rebellion.
December 1, 1569 – The rebellion begins to collapse as the northern forces of the rebels are met with the loyal forces of the crown.
December 13, 1569 – The remaining rebels are forced to flee, and the rebellion is effectively crushed.
2) Foreign Plots to alter succession
Leads to Papal Bull Febuary 25th 1570 - encourages more plots
Ridolfi plot
Support of 5000 spanish troops
April 1571 – Ridolfi and other conspirators are arrested.
October 1571 – The plot is uncovered, leading to executions of the conspirators.
Throckmorton plot
May 1583 – Uncovered by walsingham. Throckmorton is arrested and confesses to his involvement in the plot.
10th July 1584 – Throckmorton is executed.
Babington plot
July 1586 – The plot is uncovered by Walsingham’s spies. Babington and his co-conspirators are arrested.
August 1586 – Mary, Queen of Scots, is implicated in the plot, leading to her trial.
October 1586 – Babington and other conspirators are executed.
February 8th 1587 – Mary, Queen of Scots, is executed for her involvement in the plot.
3) Parliment
1559-1560 – she has smallpox- petition
1566 - Robert Bell voices she must marry/name an heir
Febuary 8th 1576 - Wentworth, need to marry and name heir
eval – tacitcal, does not commit. he is arrested, idea of cult of gloriana . Arrester under treason act of November 21st 1571
Nov 4th 1579 -Stubbs hand cut of for seidtion for cirtising lack of succesor/courtshop
November 11, 1591 voices she will live in ‘infamy’ . He was interrogated and imprisoned until 1593
When he was released he attempted to force Elizabeth to name a successor again and was re-imprisoned until his death in 1597.
. He was arrested again on December 3, 1593, and remained in 1597

Ultimately uses flattery to limit tensions/maintain power when single – is well loved
Has an cult of gloriana—is an virgin and is married to england
1576 – Edmund Spenser writes allegorical poem the faerie queen – compares her to Greek goddess Diana
Flattery to keep them close – Hatton her lids- Dudley her eyes
Accession day – November 17th – Dress up and hold party at court
Allows influence over parliament – hatton unmarried till age 26, Dudley for 16years
