Elizabeth lost power but remained powerful. In an era when physical beauty was important, being old and ugly was bad. Lots of issues in the last years were outside of her control, like the weather for example.

Advisors die - Dudley in 1588, Hatton in 1591 and William Cecil in 1598.

Essex sent to put down tryonne rebellion - threat as staging post for spanish invasaion
14 August 1598 – loose battle of yellowford, 2000 english killed
1599 – Essex sent with 160000 tropps , costs £ 280000
1600 – signs peace treaty Elizabeth’s against will
Condemned on return. = Essex rebellion
Feb 7th 1601 – pefromance of richarf the 2nd
40 shillings (equivalent to £558 in 2023)
Feb 8th 1601 – takes 4 privy concileeres hostage, 200 march to London bridge
Denoounced as traitors and loose support
25th febuary 1601 – executed

3)Funding war
how was given only 480000, 1589, however the war had cost £1 million up to that date – costs over 126000 – 1/2 yearly income
1588=orrowed £75 000 from wealthy subjects.
1588 – forcibly borrows 56000 of city of London at 10% p/a
1593 -have spent 7 million - Cecil claimed 300,000 was needed.
Raleigh argued that any tax increase show not fall on the poorest, however he was ignored and taxes went up again.
Bacon opposes – nobility must sell gold, Raleigh opposes as causes poverty
1600- Elizabeth forced to sell £200 000 of crown lands
4)Social Problems
June 1592-3 - plagues in London – 15000
1594 -1598- A run of bad harvests (mentioned in A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream).
More vagabonds about. 555 were punished in London in 1600 compared to 209 in 1578
1593 -The Goose Fair is cancelled in 1593 due to food riots.
1595.- Several are executed for a riot outside the Tower of London
1596- food prices were double what they usually were.
1596- the government abandoned attempts to collect ship money.
1598 – 2nd poor relief act – jps msut help
1590s – Puritan help – Henry tooly sets up alms houses in Ipswich, Leicester sets up hospitals in Warwick, whitgift sets up alms houses
19th December 1601 poor laws- Poor tax for deserving , illegal to beg with no liscence, sent to corrections
1602- the army mutinied in Gloucester over having to pay for uniforms.
November 21st 1596 – oxforshire rsing
20 questioned, 5 taken to london, 3 killed
Accused for making war against the queen by coke under 1571 treason act
Tillage act =November 27, 1597.
4) Religion
1593 - ralieghs bill aims to resist punishemnt for puritans
Barron greenwood set up churches in London
=fails - may 24th 1593- act against seditious secreates. Arrested.
july 5th 1598 - Blackwell archpriest of england - they support liz over him as she give printing press
1601 - MPs put forward a more catholic bill to end plurality (priests having several jobs), but Archbishop Whit gift argued it wasn’t part of the prerogative and the bill was scrapped.
