Problem of Religion Flashcards
What year was the Religious Settlement introduced
1559
2 acts making up religious settlement
Act of Supremacy
Act of Uniformity
2 types of measures put in place to enforce religious settlement
Visitations
Royal Injunctions
Why was the Religious Settlement a ‘middle way’
Took into account both Catholic and Protestant beliefs
Some features of the religious settlement
Protestant official religion
Catholics fined for not attending church
Refused to give way to extreme Protestant ideas e.g puritans
All important officials swear an oath of loyalty to accept Elizabeth’s title as supreme governor of the Church of England
Bible and church service in English (protestant/ Puritan view)
Bishops help run church (Catholic/ Protestant view)
Ornaments and decorations allowed in church (Protestant/ Catholic view)
+ lots more- main idea is that Protestant is main religion whilst still reflecting some Catholic beliefs too to satisfy Catholics
What was the aim of Elizabeth creating a religious settlement
Reflect her Protestant beliefs whilst finding a ‘middle way’ that satisfied major religious groups to prevent civil war/ rebellion
Who is classed as a recuasant
Someone who refused/ failed to attend church
2 Examples of royal injunctions (way of enforcing religious settlement)
Recusants must be identified and reported to JPs/ the Privy council and fined if failed to attend church on Sunday/ holy days
Condemn (ban) catholic practices like pilgrimages
1 example of royal visitations
125 commissioners toured the countryside including ensuring that regulations were being followed correctly
(Over 400 clergy resigned/ sacked 1559- 1564)
Why were over 400 clergy sacked/ resigned between 1559 and 1564
125 commissioners toured countryside ensuring regulations were being followed correctly and that clergy had sworn oath of supremacy
If clergy weren’t following religious settlement then the commissioners could sack them
Royal injunctions vs visitations
Both were ways to ensure that the religious settlement was being enforced across all churches
Injunctions- instructions ordering clergy to do certain things like ensure recusants were fined
Visitations- commissioners that toured country identifying any clergy that weren’t following these instructions (they could be sacked)
What was a clergy
People who took the church service
Why couldn’t Elizabeth make the religious settlement fully Protestant
There were still lots of Catholics in the country from Mary 1’s reign who was Queen before Elizabeth
They could potentially rebel against Elizabeth cause civil war but Elizabeth wanted to remain popular
What religion was Mary 1 (Queen before Elizabeth)
Extreme Catholic
What religion was Edward v1 (monarch 2 reigns before Elizabeth)
Extreme Protestant
