Probability And Significance, Type 1 And Type 2 Errors Flashcards

1
Q

Definition of level of significance

A

The level at which the decision is made to reject the null hypothesis in favour of the experimental hypothesis. It states how sure we can be that the iv is having an effect on the dv, and this is not due to chance

Q

What is a type 1 error

A

This is when we may reject the null hypothesis and accept the experimental hypothesis, however the results of the study are really due to chance and are acc not statistically different.
Since we have made a mistake, we should’ve accepted the null instead

Q

What is a type 2 error

A

This means we accept the null and reject the experimental however the results of the study are statistically significant and are not due to chance
So we have made a mistake and we should’ve accepted the experimental hypothesis

Q

What three questions should u ask?

A

Does the research involve a correlation, a test of difference, or an association?
Which research design is being used? Independent, repeated or matched pairs

Q

Difference between parametric and non parametric

A

More robust and more powerful
They rely on acc data rather than rank order of data
