Correlations Flashcards
1
Q
What are correlations used for
A
To analyse the strength of the relationship between 2 quantitative variables, Co-variables
2
Q
How can data for a correlation test be obtained
A
Non experimental sources. E.g. survey
3
Q
What can the strength of a correlation be between
A
-1 and +1
4
Q
Adv of correlations
A
- allows establishment of strength of the relationship between 2 variables and measure if precisely
- allows researchers to investigate things that could not be manipulated for ethical or practical reasons
- predictions can be made about one of the variables based on what is known abt the other variable
5
Q
Disadv of correlations
A
- cause and effect cannot be established, can’t tell which one I fluemces the other
- even if there is a correlation it might be that the variables are not acc related and it’s instead due to confounding variables
- correlation only measures linear rs not curvilinear where at one it goes from posit e to negative
