method used to take qualitative dat and convert it into quantitative data using a coding system. e.g. how many times a person sleeps

pilot study, ensures coding units dont overlap

A
this is when themes are found and recognised after coding a set of data, and are idealy more descriptive than coding units

increases the validity of content analysis

- easy and not time consuming
- allows statistical analysis if needed
- reliable as coding units are not open to interpretation, so are applied by researches the same way over time

- causality cannot be established as it only describes the data
- cannot extract any deeper meaning and explanations for the patterns
