features of science - replicability, falsifiability Flashcards

1
Q

what is replicability

A

the extent to which the findings of research can be repeated in different contexts and circumstances. if it is then the data is scientifc and reliable
Reliability relies on findings being consistent and can help validate research findings
Very important when looking at small sample size - if we cannot repeat the findings then they should not be used form theories

Q

why is it important to check replicability

A
  • protects agaibst scinetific fraud
  • check is resukst are a one off fluke
  • to check validity and reliability

Q

what two things must a scientific theory be

A

testable and falsifiable (test and potentially be rejected, e.g Freud psychosexual can not be tested so its unfalsifiable)
