Probability Flashcards
Probability
How likely it is that an event will occur. Formally written P(event)
Event
A group of outcomes of a situation
Outcome
A result
Sample Space
The set of all possible outcomes
Theoretical Probability
The ratio of the number of times an certain event may happen to the number of possible outcomes of all events.
Experimental Probability
The ratio of the number of times an event actually happens to the number of times the experiment is done.
Relative Frequency
Ratio of the frequency of the category to the total frequency
Dependent Events
When the outcome of one event affects the probability of a second event, the events are dependent events.
Independent Events
When the outcome of one event does not effect the probability of a second event, the events are independent events.
Conditional Probability
Contains a condition that may limit the sample space for an event. P(B|A)
Mutually Exclusive Events
Two events that cannot occur at the same time. P(A + B) = P(A) + P(B)
Permutation
An ordered selection of r objects from a set of n objects
nPr
Combination
An unordered selection of r objects from a set of n objects
nCr
