1) Cost is lower
2) More Flexibility
3) Fewer Administrative tasks
4) Possible Liability transfer
Are private police focused on rime response?
No, private police are focused on crime prevention. Government police are responsible for crime response.
What are the five specific categories of distinction between public and private policing identified by Carlson?
1) Philosophical-Government polices forces have moral authority.
2) Legal-Private police do not have the same powers as government forces.
3) Financial-Private police can cheaply perform some of the same tasks as the public police.
4) Operational-Private police are more flexible and spend almost their entire shift on the beat.
5) Security/Political. Private police give citizens more control over their own safety by augmenting police efforts and helping to maintain order. Private police can encourage citizens to follow community standards.
