rank pt diagnosis/actions in order of importance, helps sequence interventions, based on urgency/time
Time management aspect
do now, do later, don’t do. helps shape to do list by focusing on important - can delegate
Why set priorities?
limited time, resources, budget, separate needs from wants, id real priorities, ensure most important work gets done, avoid firefighting
Prioritization helps to
decide which pt needs/problems are immediate. high = greatest threat SAFETY, medium = not life threatening, low = not related to current level of health. can be psychosocial or physiologic
Nursing actions that necessitate planning because they are time sensitive
ex: need blood culture before antibiotics. insulin, surgery, antibiotics, critical meds
