abbreviation
A letter or series of letters denoting a complete word.
contour line
A dashed or solid line on a plot plan that passes through points with the same elevation.
prehung door
A wood or metal door that is fitted at a mill into the door frame with hardware installed.
orthographic projection
A drawing in which all the faces of an object are projected onto flat planes, generally at 90 to one another.
mullion
A vertical member of the frame between the sashes.
total rise
In a stairway, the vertical distance from the surface of the lower floor to the surface of the floor above.
swinging-sash window
A window in which the sashes pivot to provide ventilation.
fixed-sash window
A window in which the sash is inoperable.
section
A scaled view created by passing a cutting plane either horizontally or vertically through a portion of a building.
unit run
The width of the stair tread not including the nosing.
hollow-core door
A wood door with a core constructed of corrugated wood or fiber and covered with veneer plies.
schedule
A detailed list on a print that provides information about building components such as windows, doors, and mechanical equipment.
solid-core door
A wood door with a core constructed of solid wood blocks or particleboard glued together and covered with veneer plies.
detail
A scaled plan view, elevation, or section produced at a larger scale to show special features.
total run
In a stairway, the horizontal distance from the face of the bottom riser to the face of the top riser.
horizontal sliding window
A sliding-sash window with sashes that slide horizontally past each other.
unit rise
Vertical distance from the top of one tread to the top of an adjoining tread in a stairway.
flush door
A door with flat surfaces on each side; the stile and rails are concealed within the door.
datum point
A concrete marker within sighting distance of a lot, a mark on a fire hydrant, the top of a sewer grate or access cover in a street, or another point established by the city as a local point of reference.
elevation

A scaled view looking directly at a vertical surface.
request for proposal (RFP)
A formal document that is used to solicit interest and responses from contractors and may include such items as the scope of work to be performed, a description of the desired intention and functionality of the completed project, price range, and any other items to ensure bidders on the project have all necessary information.
perspective drawing
A pictorial drawing showing an object as it appears when viewed from a given point.
door hand
The direction in which a door swings.
owner
The purchaser of a construction project.
design-build
A project delivery system in which a contractor provides the design work and building construction services.
sliding-sash window
A window in which the sashes can be moved vertically or horizontally past one another.
architect
A professional who designs and draws plans for a structure.
general contractor
A person or company that agrees to fulfill an entire building agreement with various items or types of work to be completed such as carpentry, electrical, and plumbing work.
casement window
A swinging-sash window with a vertically hinged sash that swings outward.
design-bid-build
A project delivery system in which an architectural firm works directly with the owner to design a project.
plot plan
A scaled working drawing that shows the shape and size of a building; location, shape, and overall size of a building on the lot; and the finished floor elevation of the building.
fire door
A fire-resistant door and assembly, including the frame and hardware, commonly equipped with an automatic door closer.
setback
The required distance between a structure on a piece of property and the property line.
symbol
A pictorial representation of a structural or material component used on a print.
stair ratio
The relationship between riser height (R) and tread width (T) in a stairway.
hopper window
A swinging-sash window that is hinged along the bottom rail of the sash with the upper rail swinging inward.
supplier
A company that provides materials and equipment to general contractors and subcontractors.
scale
The relative size to which an object is drawn.
double-hung window
A sliding-sash window in which the two sashes slide vertically past each other.
isometric drawing
A drawing in which the three principle axes are 120 apart.
tradesworker
A worker who has considerable knowledge and experience in a particular area of construction.
point of beginning (POB)
A fixed location on a building site used as a reference point for horizontal and vertical dimensions.
benchmark
A concrete marker within sighting distance of a lot, a mark on a fire hydrant, the top of a sewer grate or access cover in a street, or another point established by the city as a local point of reference. Also called a datum point.
panel door
A door with individual panels between the stiles and rails.
transverse section
A section created by passing a cutting plane through the short dimension of a building.
building information modeling (BIM)
An integrated, electronically managed system that aligns all working drawings, structural drawings, and shop drawings into a consistent system.
awning window
A swinging-sash window that is hinged on the top rail of the sash with the lower rail swinging outward.
floor plan
A plan view of a building that shows the arrangement of walls and partitions as they appear in an imaginary horizontal section taken approximately 5’-0’’ above floor level.
longitudinal section
A section created by passing a cutting plane through the long dimension of a building.
subcontractor
A person or party that performs part of the work on a construction project under an agreement with the general contractor.
