PRINCIPLES OF C/O INTX GEOMETRY (CF-5) Flashcards
MAGNETIC DIRECTION
JSTARS, AWACS, and other C2 systems use magnetic headings in their computations. All bearing measurements you use while controlling air-to-air will be in magnetic directions.
CUTOFF GEOMETRY
Cutoff geometry is primarily used as the fastest way to join any two aircraft, whether the target is an enemy fighter or friendly aircraft rejoining a formation.
ASPECT ANGLE
AA)—The angle between the longitudinal axis of the target (projected rearward) and the line of sight to the interceptor measured from the tail of the target. An important thing to remember about aspect angle is that the fighter’s/interceptor’s heading has nothing to do with determining aspect angle.
HOT / FLANK / BEAM / DRAG
IAS
Indicated Airspeed (IAS)—Speed indicated by aircraft instruments.
MACH
Mach—The expression of speed relative to the speed of sound.
C/O INTX 2
Intercept—A cutoff intercept is used when minimum time to intercept is desired. Also known as a collision course intercept,
C/O GEOMETRY 2
If both the fighter and target are on steady headings and at the same speed then an isosceles triangle will be formed.
DRAG
0 TO 60 (T TO 6)
BEAM
70 TO 110 (7 TO 11)
FLANK
120 TO 150 (12 TO 15)
HOT
160 TO 180 (16 TO H)
