A

Airborne Radar Unit (ARU). An airborne radar unit can be used as an extension of a military radar unit (MRU) during planned exercises and daily training missions.

MRU/ARU RESPONSIBILITIES

A

MRU/ARUs are not commissioned ATC facilities

  1. Retaining aircraft under its jurisdiction within the limits of altitudes and within the boundary of airspace released to the unit by ATC as specified in paragraph 13-1-10 (see Staying in the Airspace below).
  2. Providing radar traffic advisory service to participating military aircraft.
  3. Separation of participating military aircraft while operating in the ATCAA/SUA.
  4. Immediately advising ATC whenever participating aircraft cannot remain within the boundary of the allocated airspace (Whiskey Alerts).
  5. Providing military command and control functions as directed by military authorities.
  6. Relaying all ATC clearances verbatim and preface each clearance with “ATC clears”.
  7. Advising the associated ATC whenever the activities within the allocated airspace are terminated.

Staying in the Airspace

A

The MRU

  1. Shall provide external boundary calls to participating aircraft to assist the pilot in remaining within airspace boundaries.
  2. Will assist participating aircraft in avoiding all observed nonparticipating traffic through the issuance of radar traffic information.
  3. Shall confirm the assigned altitude block within the ATCAA/SUA with participating aircraft upon initial contact/airspace entry to ensure each is familiar with the vertical airspace limits.

MARSA

A

MARSA is a condition whereby the military services involved assume responsibility for separation between participating military aircraft.

Military Assumes Responsibility for Separation of Aircraft (MARSA)

NOTE: MARSA can only be declared between participating military aircraft. It is not possible for a military aircraft to declare MARSA with a civilian stranger within their airspace.
