An aircraft being hijacked could identify this situation to any ground or airborne radar control unit by squawking mode 3, code 7500. (2:6-3-4b2) On the AWACS console, the letter “J” will appear above the aircraft data

The word “mayday” is the internationally recognized aircrew distress call
Emergency Locator Transmitters (ELT)
The other radio is the ELT, which is transmitting its beeper tone to any listener, ground or airborne, who may be monitoring guard within the range of the radio. Depending on the possibility of prior radio communication, the ELT may be the first audio signal/message that communicates the existence of a downed pilot.
AIRBORNE EMERGENCY CONTROLLER ACTIONS
controllers should have a checklist (titled 337 ACS Mission Crew Guide) available at their radar console, which serves as the primary source of information during such an event.
