Primary Ecnomic Activity Flashcards
Explain what primary, secondary and tertiary do ?
- Primary - raw materials are produced from the earth e.g farming, forestry, fishing(three F’s).
- Secondary - workers in factories use the raw materials to make things people can buy e.g bakers
- Tertiary - people provide services that other people require e.g hairdressers.
Name the 3 Economic activities
Primary,secondary, tertiary
Name three jobs in each sector
- Primary - fisher,farmers,miners
- Secondary - bakers,car manufactures, tailors
- Tertiary - hairdressers,shop keeper, tour guides
Name the Earths 2 natural resources
Non - renewable and renewable
Renewable (examples and what it is)
renewable sources and non - finite. They do not run out. If taken care of they will always exist. Examples are water, fish, timber. If forester cut down trees they should plant them again. This is called sustainable exploitation
Explain the term sustainable exploitation
• People use resources for their needs without putting the needs of the next generation at risk.
Non- Renewable
Non - renewable sources are finite. They will eventually run out. Minerals are finite. Oil wells will dry out and coal seams are worked out.
Water as a resource
Water is a basic resource needed to maintain human life and grow food. It is a renewable resource
Water Supply for the Dublin Region
The Dublin region has more than 1 million people therefore has high water demands. Most of dublin supply comes from Wicklow because
•Wicklow has a Hugh annual rainfall thar is well distributed through out the year
• the bedrock of Wicklow mountain is granite so therefore water doesn’t go through to the rock because it isn’t a permeable rock
•the mountains are thinly populated so most farming takes place in the lowlands. Less pollution
Water from the Liffey
Water from the Liffey is collected in Blessington Lakes and Leixlip Reservoir.
Water Conservation
Water is a precious resource.Ireland sometimes has low rainfall during a period. In dry periods, people are encourages to conserve water
Water Pollution
Water is polluted from many different sources. The River Rhine is known as Europe’s open sewer. It takes much time and money to clean populated rivers
What is Irrigation
Irrigation is the artificial watering of vexation through canal and piping system
Egypt,River Nile Irrigation System
- in 1975 the Aswan high dam was built to control the flow of the river Nile.
- behind the dam lake Nassau grew. Canals and pipes were constructed from the late to farmland on the floodplain of the river Nile
Advantages of the Aswan High Dam
After the Aswan high dam was built they can get water when needed
Disadvantages of the Aswan High Dam
- much water is lost because of evaporation.
- the river Nile floodplain no long is flooded. There fertile sediment don’t go on the crops. So they have to use expensive ones.
Where is oil found
Oil is found USA and Mexico and other countries.
The price of oil
Oil prices rose sharply in 2007 and early 2008 this was because
•Europe,USA,Japan had high demands
• demand increased sharply in China and India.
• the market believed the supply of oil could not reach the high demands
Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia is a country that is made up of desert. Until 1930s it was little known land of nomadic herders. The discovery of oil change all of that. With the export of oil Saudi Arabia became a wealthy company.
Where is Oil found near Ireland
North Sea.
Natural Gas - The Kinsale Head Gas Field
• the kinsale head gas field has been providing natural gas for many years.it has supplied gas to many irish towns. But will soon be exhausted
The Corrib Gas Field
•Gas is also found in Co.Mayo, known as the Corrib Gas Field
Name Renewable Energy
Wind Energy, tidal energy, geothermal energy, hydroelectricity and solar energy
