Bogs are found in midlands and can be 8metres deep.

Describe blanket bogs
Blanket bogs are found on mountains and are 1.5metres deep.
Traditional ways of cutting peat and what did irish people use peat for.
- irish people for centuries extracted peat/turf from bogs as fuel for cooking and heating their homes.
- workers use a sléan to cut sods of turf . The turf was let to dry and carried home with a horse and cart.
Modern peat productions
•in 1946 the irish government set up bord na móna to develop the peat industry. Bord na móna used modern technology to speed up the explotation of the bogs.

- The bogs are prepared. They are drain levelled and supplied with railway tracks.

Miller - scrapes loose a shallow layer
Harrow - harrows the layer pulled by a tractor.
Ridger - peat is gathered in ridges and is covered in plastic

•bogs are an ideal place for Windfarms because they have flat land,exposed to landscape (no wind) and few residential areas.

•bogs are unique habitat so preserving them is important to maintain biodiversity. Creasing this will attract tourist.
